My personal story is an accomplishment and a testament to ability to have opportunities and succeed in America. In 2007, I arrived in the United States under political asylum from Cuba. With limited resources, I had to quickly adapt to a new country. I overcame the language, cultural barriers, and lack of resources. I embrace this country and made it my own. I do not look back I just can see the future in front of my eyes, and I will not let the opportunity go, my best tool to overcome hardship has been seeking an education.

Education was my personal way to pursue freedom and to follow the “American dream.” The advisor at Glendale Community College guide me to the process of becoming a nurse, waiting three years on the famous “waiting list” give me the time to work in my English skills. I got communication, psychology, and storytelling classes. But I do not regret that waiting because becoming a nurse was the best decision that I ever made. I am sure that I will be an excellent Nurse Practitioner since I have strong leadership skills, positive attitude, integrity, and compassion for patients. I can offer services in a safer manner following the principles of nursing and the nursing process.

It is time for us to give back to the community providing family care services with quality, resources, work force, and hope.

The day that I became a nurse, I promised that I will become the best nurse that I can be. Four years later, I am a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse, that strongly believe in the rehabilitation process. A multidisciplinary approach with the nurse as a team leader will increase the probability of meet patient’s goals. This program will give me the tools that I need to bring the rehabilitation approach to the community and help the individuals with disabilities and complex rehabilitation needs.

Grand Canyon University is giving me an opportunity to keep growing as nurse and advance my career to another level. I will fully embrace that opportunity. My plan is based on good time management, online learning, seeking a mentor, excellent communication with my professors, and never give up.
